3. My favorite book is a tie between Gloria Naylor's Mama Day and Alice Walker's The Color Purple. Regretfully the sequel to the Walker book, The Temple of My Familiar fell short for me.
4. If I had done my original assignment about finding a statistics website I'd know the answer to this question, but I'll do some quick research right now.
4.a My previous knowledge about any statistical package is limited. I took intro to statistics more than ten years ago! After reading the first chapter to the course, I realize that I have seen statistics around me. Watching television and hearing that "Four out of five dentists prefer Denteen" is an example of statistics. The most insidious use of statistics is when they numbers are twisted to manipulate opinions. Bill O'Reilly, although I love him is guilty of the same, but at least he freely admits that his polling is not scientific.

Welcome Back To School!

August 30 began the 2007-2008 school term. Returning teachers for the coming school year include Mrs. Bonnie Dolph, Mrs. Denise Meyer for Art ,Mrs. Angela Meyer, Mrs. Meredith Dalton, Mrs. Michelle Meyer for violin, Mrs. Alice Shaparenko, Miss Sophia Meyer, Mr. Peter Polydore and Mr. Fitzroy Lewis. Returning as Head Teacher and Acting Principal is Mr. Raymond Shaparenko. Mrs. Patsy Cooley makes her debut as the drilling teacher. The student body has expanded by one with the addition of Analise Branch in Kindergarten. The school will miss its 2007 graduates Miss Tabatha Schlieg who is attending Penn Foster College online and Mr. Kemuel Polydore, a student at Penn State Berks. Ex-student Mr. Johnathan Flores is enjoying full-time employment at Shalom Farm.

The student body has lots to look forward to this year, including planned breaks for Feast of Tabernacles September 27-October 4th and Passover and Days of Unleavened Bread(dates to be determined). Students know to complete notes for each service and to submit them in the form of a report. The 2008 Farm Show is another field trip opportunity where students will observe and complete a report on the event.

Last year's Science Fair was a great success. Students in all grades enjoyed the projects and the science principles explained. We look forward to more fun things, like the roller coaster and the magnifying glass this year. Careful for misspellings on those posters, Mrs. Branch will be around with her Sharpie!

Last year's Art Show was like a real live art show with beautiful exhibits and a place to leave comments. We can't wait to see the beautiful displays that will be set up this year.

The capstone event of last school year was the Commencement Ceremony, which included Elder Meyer's famous "I'm From the Old School" Sermon. If you missed it, it was reprinted an recent issue of the Sacred Name Broadcaster! The evening was also marked by tables full of gifts for the graduates, Mrs. Peggy's famous cakes, and delicious food and drink.

As we look upon a fresh, new school year, we can't help but think about previous school years and we look forward to the fun and learning that we will experience this year. Look for more newsletters that will help you, the parent, stay informed!

Fool Me Once, Shame on You, Fool me Twice...

As we round the bend of this course, I'm excited to be reading "The Tales of Uncle Remus". Years ago to illustrate a point to a student I had him read the story of "The Tar Baby" by Joel Chandler Harris, parenthetically I thought he was black. The student got the book and attempted to read the story, but ended up sounded like "Mushmouth" from Fat Albert." He didn't "get" the point of the story because the dialect was so thick and undecipherable that the moral was lost on him. I ended up having to to tell him about reverse psychology, which was the point of the story. In preparing for this class, remembering the tough time my student had with reading the tale, I opted to get the book on tape. I was pleasantly surprised to hear the tales in modern vernacular. Lester mentioned shopping malls and laundromats and I thought that this couldn't be the same story I had heard so many years ago. He said witty things like, " About a week later Brer Rabbit decided to visit with Miz Meadow and the girls. Don't come asking me who Miz Meadows and her girls were. I don't know, but then again, ain't no reason I got to know. Miz Meadows and the girls were in the tale when it was haded to me, and they gon' be in it when I hand it to you. And that the way the rains fall on that one." It caught me off guard and made me laugh. Julius Lester, my hero, thankfully redid these stories, removing any vestige of slavery or Uncle Remus for that matter. What he did retain was the original "flava" of the stories, the humor, the love, the sense of community and the cleverness of Brer Rabbit and his camaraderie or rivalry with his other brothers and sisters. Of course we all love the most outstanding tale, "Tar Baby", but I was pleased to discover other equally hilarious tales such as "Brer Rabbit Finally Gets Beaten" a twist on the classic hare and tortoise tale and "Brer Rabbit and Brer Lion" which sounded oh so much like Aesop's "The Fox and the Grapes". There was one that sounded very much like "Little Red Riding Hood" or one of its many variants, "Brer Possum Hears the Singing" and one that sounded Biblical in proportions, "Brer Lion Meets the Creature." One of our colleagues wondered if people would be offended by these stories, but I told her not to be afraid of Uncle Remus; there is nothing to be offended by. A few politicians have been taken to task recently for daring to mention tar baby. In examining their stories within the context, I admit that they didn't say anything wrong. Black people are understandable sensitive when it comes to issues like these. We can discuss tar baby and Uncle Remus but for any other race of people, it's off limits. True, tricksters are "mischievous, witty and creative" which is proved in any one of the stories we read. They are "amoral", "boundary-crossers" and ultimately survivors. In the end, we can laugh at ourselves reflected in these humorous stories. These characters certainly have a handle on the psychological games needed to survive and thrive .

During Passover, I picked up a greeting card with Moses and his wife Zipporah on the cover. The caption said something about her getting directions to get them to Promised Land, instead of having them wander the wilderness for forty years! I laughed at it and realized that I could laugh at Jewish humor. To interject, Julius Lester says, "Why would I be so mean as not to share something I believe is beautiful...Clearly in folktales you experience something of the essence of what it means to be human. It's shortsighted and ultimately mean-spirited to try to limit that experience to a single culture or group...I honestly don't care what your culture is or what your skin color is. If these stories move you...then please share these stories." These stories moved me. Eric Kimmel's "The Jar of Fools" has a beautiful, spiritual feel as it starts and then ends on such a funny note that spread joy within me. It perfectly sets up the situation in the city of Chelm and their residents wit decidedly "foolish"names. I don't know how anyone could have written or told these stories with a straight face. It was funny how whenever there was a controversy, they had to consult the elders and then of course a new Talmudic law had to be created to solve the problem. This is not unlike in real life. Just like Brer Rabbit, Shlemiel never learns from his mistakes with the goat and the brandy and the carp!

Black and Jew have a history of shared heartache but prove that they can still laugh, at themselves and each other.

In elementary school I had the opportunity to attend a live production of J.M. Barrie's "Peter Pan." I don't know if I was in a bad mood or what but I recall being bothered by the spectacle of the story(boys in tight and flying through the air!). Towards the end when we had to clap to save Tinkerbell, I refused. I remember looking around at all the kids clapping wildly and thinking them fools. "Clapping won't save a fairy" and" fairies aren't real anyway," I can hear my eight year old self saying. This story dovetails perfectly into the topic of our last two classes, Disney and 'fakelore' and urban myths and childhood legends.

I suppose growing up in a religious home made me cynical. We didn't do "Santa Claus" the Easter Bunny, The Great Pumpkin, Father Time, Baby New Year, Cupid, Halloween or Thanksgiving. The one thing we did do for a little while was the Tooth Fairy. I remember losing a tooth and waking up the next morning with a quarter (hey it was the 70's!) under my pillow. My parents told me that it was from the Tooth Fairy, but because we didn't do any other of the little "lies" from childhood, I didn't believe them. I just wondered how mom had gotten under my pillow without me waking up.

On our discussion board, people rationalize about lying to their children; they know it's wrong, but they don't want to "deny" them the experiences that they've had, thus making childhood more endearing. I am of the belief, based in the Bible that you really shouldn't' practice lying to children. There are so many biblical passages connected to this that it would take an entire reaction paper to record and respond to them. The most familiar to people would be "You shall not bear false witness" in the ubiquitous Exodus 20. chapter Bearing false witness is lying, period.

After reading the beginnings of this course, we see how omnipresent Disney is to our sensibilities, lives, childhood and children. When I first saw "Peter Pan" was it automatically associated with Disney and its vast "right and religious" empire? Is it a coincidence that Mulan. Based upon a true person according to Maxine Hong Kingston, is my second favorite Disney movie? ("Brother Bear" with its black bear portrayed by black actors is my favorite.) Penn State Alum Henry Giroux in "Animating Youth: the Disnification of Children's Culture" is an eye-opener, but the concepts are not far-fetched. Disney is maliciously imposing itself on every single vestige of America; if they are going to do this, they must do it right. "Even more disturbing is thewidespread belief that Disney's trademarked innocence renders it unaccountable for the diverse ways in which it shapes the sense of reality it provides for children as they take up specific and often sanitized notions of identity, difference, and history in the seemingly apolitical, cultural universe of 'the Magic Kingdom.' For example, Jon Wiener, argues that Disneyland's version of Main Street America harkens back to an "image of small towns characterized by cheerful commerce, with barbershop quartets and ice cream sundaes and glorious parades." For Wiener this view not only fictionalizes and trivializes the history or real Main Streets at the turn of the century, it also represents an appropriation of the past to legitimate a present that portrays a world "without tenements or poverty or urban class conflict....it's a native white Protestant dream of a world without blacks or immigrants."(Giroux, 1995) He also states "Children's culture is a sphere where entertainment, advocacy, and pleasure meet to construct conceptions of what it means to be a child occupying a combination of gender, racial, and class positions in society through which one defines oneself in relation to a myriad of others." (Giroux,1995) This culture of children is hotly debated because of the ramification; to Disney there is commercialism and there is a ton of money to be made off of children. To parents it should be to protect children in their childhood, make it a safe place for them. Important and critical is the fact that "the individual and collective identities of children and youth are largely shaped politically and pedagogically in the popular visual culture of videogames, television, film, and even in leisure sites such as malls and amusement parks." (Giroux,1995 ) Our identities are formed by what we see on TV and what we are taught as kids. So, did I refuse to clap for Tinkerbell because I rejected the European concept that beauty in the form of that little fairy, is white, lithe, blonde with blue eyes? Did I reject the idea that people really could fly? I guess I hadn't read Virginia Hamilton's folktales. Was I bothered by the fact that Peter Pan wore tights? Jack Zipes' "Breaking the Disney Spell" held some of the answers for me. Although actor James Baskett won an honorary Oscar for his turn as Uncle Remus, the story isn't one that blacks take a shine to. So I was good to reject Disney before they rejected me. But we'll see how I feel once Disney releases "Maddy" it's first Black princess. I'm sure that I'll be the one clapping wildly, even giving a standing ovation this time!
